I think Robert Anton Wilson who first said I am, in general, agnostic; but as pertains to "God" I am decidedly atheist. anyway, I heard it first from Xen Dada Axis (hive).
One can be a Gnostic and Atheist, or Agnostic and a Theist, or a Gnostic and a Theist. Or not.
Abraham was the last, I would tend towards the first, but of course have doubts (see below).
In the shuffle gets lost the meaning of gnosticism.
What does it mean to know?
Think I have faith in knowing, but I don't put too much credence in believing.

I love this believing and knowing conversation. For me, believing is fundamental to knowing... because I had to build my belief in my ability to know. Maybe it is two different streams, but that process also integrated believing and knowing for me. I think it connects to intuition, too.
Thanks for the comment haremind.
I guess I look at believing as an active process that we can use. A mental tool.
Knowing is more passive (like Shiva prone under Kali's rampaging feet http://whyifeelcrazy.com/?p=204), it's in the background, and so more fundamental. It is the glue which holds ones particular reality together.
What one knows can contradict what one believes and this will create imbalance.
For me intuition is spontaneous, one can be open to it but not control it. It is like lighting which illuminates the dark landscape of knowledge.
I agree with you that a good starting place for manipulating reality is to cultivate a belief in our ability to know and intuit.
